Indeed both poems begin with an invocation to someone else — the Muse, who is also invoked elsewhere in the poems for example II. The formulaic Epistory: Typing Chronicles of Greek epic is very elaborate, so elaborate that it must have developed Heroes of Kalevala a period of centuries ; any one singer could off hope to invent a very few formulas. The incident was the release by the Samians of three hundred Corey rean boys, whom Periander was sending to Alyattes as a present. But it does not exclude a much later date ; in a poet could still conjure up the romantic associations of Cyprian Aphrodite Unitarians have drawn attention to the unity of structure which the poem exhibits 69 and they have made this their chief argument for single authorship. The metaphor may be a very old one. In the time of Pindar it still flourished. If, at least, he had flourished after about 55o, the modern world would be likely to know more about him ; and ancient erudition may have been right in regarding him as earlier than Stesichoros ; but it is hardly possible to decide whether Alcman belongs to the seventh or the sixth century. One more preliminary criticism. The possibility that the poet himself wrote the Iliad down may be considered first. The owner of such a text regards his copy as a standard, to which he can refer in order to find out what the poem says ; this is modern practice. He seems to have mentioned Xanthos 45 , who would therefore be earlier.

Cynaethos, late in the sixth century, seems to have revised traditional poetry, adding something of his own, but accepting much from his predecessors i3. The Iliad shows hardly any knowledge of hoplite-equipment ; but so martial a poem would not be likely to ignore thus a revolutionary change in military tactics. The inferior poet may repeat, with little alteration, his own song or one he has learnt from another poet ; but the better poets alter their songs considerably at every recitation. The work of Milman Parry i helps, perhaps more than that of any other scholar, towards discovering the answer ; for he showed that the poems were composed orally and he began explaining, to those accustomed to written literature, how oral poems are composed. So, if they were mere reciters, they refrained from reciting the greater works, both Homeric and Hesiodic, that have been preserved.

The name indicates that they claimed descent from a common ancestor ; whether the ancestor, Homer, was a real man or a fiction is an insoluble question and perhaps an unimportant one. Yet even if the durations arc conjectures of this type, they are not improbable conjectures, although forty years is rather a long estimate for a generation. The Greeks do not seem to have been aware of the threat, for they were willing to marry Carthaginians. The possibility that the poet himself wrote the Iliad down may be considered first. Again it is natural to suppose that Peisistratos was tyrant of Athens when he won Sigeion, but this is not necessary. The poet forgot his oral technique and failed to acquire a technique for written varse; his written work was miserable doggerel. The following table attempts to give all the certain or very probable cases except one, whose complex development will require more discussion. Pindar and Plato provide two glimpses of oral composition among the Homeridae. Alcaeos and Sappho will provide a starting-point towards an answer ; but the problem of their date needs to be considered, for it depends on that of Periander. They composed poems of their own and they recited poems that they had learned from other poets ; as reciters they may have modified the poems that they learned by introducing much of their own. Tyranny was not a magistracy, but the Cypselids may have held annual magistracies occasionally, just as the Peisistratids did.

Before Stesichoros the history of choral lyric is obscure. His seizure of three hundred Corcyreans came at the end of the complex story of his relations with Corcyra ; so he had probably already ruled Corinth for a considerable time.
